Trip Overview
Trip Overview
Ambush Waterfowl's Sandhill Crane hunts take place across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains — one of the most productive winter staging areas in the Central Flyway. Hunters will work picked grain fields and playa lakes from layout blinds or natural field cover, set inside a spread of 200+ full-body and silhouette crane decoys. Hunts run mornings and afternoons, timed to roost and feed movements, with guides pre-scouting fields the evening before and having the spread set well before first light.
The season runs November through February, with a daily limit of three birds. All hunters are required to hold a valid Texas hunting license, the Texas Sandhill Crane endorsement, and federal HIP certification. We recommend a 12 or 20 gauge with modified or full choke and non-toxic shot (steel or bismuth). Plan to dress in tan and brown camo to match cut grain fields, and layer up — West Texas winters can swing hard. Hunts are guided and include field location scouting, full decoy setup and tear-down, and field dressing assistance. Licenses, ammunition, and accommodations are the hunter's responsibility.
Why Hunt With Us?
At Ambush Waterfowl, we're in the field every day of the season. Our guides track roost locations and active feed fields in real time, so you're always hunting where birds want to be — not chasing last week's intel. Backed by years of relationships with Texas landowners, we have access to private, low-pressure ground that keeps you out of competition with other hunting parties.
We run small groups by design. Fewer hunters in the blind means a better experience and better results, and our guides — Texas-born and Panhandle-raised — know how to work big flocks with both mouth and electronic calls to get birds committed instead of circling wide. Combined with a full, well-built decoy spread and a team that treats every hunt like it's our own, Ambush Waterfowl delivers the kind of crane hunting that keeps people coming back year after year.
