Trip Overview

Trip Overview

Ambush Waterfowl's Duck hunts take place across the playas, flooded fields, and river bottoms of West Texas — some of the most productive waterfowl habitat along the Central Flyway. Depending on conditions and bird movement, we hunt from layout blinds in flooded agriculture, pit blinds on playa lakes, or natural vegetation along creek drainages. Every hunt is set up with a full spread of decoys and backed by guides who know how to read the wind, position the spread, and call birds all the way into the pocket.

The Texas duck season typically runs late October through late January, with daily limits varying by species in accordance with current federal and state regulations. All hunters must have a valid Texas hunting license, a federal Duck Stamp, and HIP certification. We recommend a 12 gauge with modified or improved cylinder choke and non-toxic shot — steel, bismuth, or tungsten. Hunting conditions on the Texas Panhandle can range from mild early-season mornings to hard freezes in January, so layered, waterproof camouflage is essential. Hunts are fully guided and include pre-hunt scouting, decoy setup and retrieval, and calling. Licenses, ammunition, and accommodations are the hunter's responsibility.

Why Hunt With Us?

Duck hunting on the Texas Panhandle is dynamic — birds move with weather fronts, water levels shift, and the best spots can change overnight. Ambush Waterfowl guides monitor conditions daily throughout the season, adjusting locations and tactics to stay on birds no matter what the week brings. When a cold front pushes new ducks into the area, we're already one step ahead.

Our access to private playas and flooded fields gives us the flexibility to put hunters on water that doesn't get hammered by other outfitters or public pressure. We run well-trained retrievers on every hunt, so no bird goes unrecovered, and our decoy spreads are built to match the conditions — confidence decoys, motion, and placement that gets birds feet-down instead of flaring at the last second. From greenheads stacking over a flooded milo field to teal burning through at sunrise, Ambush Waterfowl delivers the full West Texas duck hunting experience.
