About the Guide

Old School Guide Service is located just west of Kansas City and only 45 minutes from Kansas City International Airport, offering convenient access to some of the most productive hunting ground in Northeast Kansas. Owned and operated by Mike and Mark Nickels, third- and fourth-generation Jefferson County natives, the operation is built on deep family roots in land stewardship, hunting tradition, and wildlife management. After returning home from the Army, Mark joined his father in managing the land and guiding operations, continuing a legacy centered on responsible habitat management and quality hunting experiences. Old School Guide Service specializes in guided Kansas whitetail deer hunts in Unit 10 and spring Eastern turkey hunts in Unit 3, along with farm and habitat management services for landowners. Jefferson County’s unique mix of cropland, pastureland, and dense hardwood timber creates ideal conditions for mature whitetail bucks and thriving turkey populations. Long-term habitat planning, balanced food sources, and carefully managed access contribute to one of the strongest deer herds in the state, with a high percentage of mid-range and older bucks. Kansas has consistently ranked among the top states for trophy-class whitetails, and Jefferson County has been recognized as the leading county in the state for record-book entries during a multi-year Buckmasters study. Old School Guide Service maintains a limited-access approach to preserve herd quality and ensure exceptional hunting opportunities.
